When a bike (motor or human powered) comes up against 2.5 tons of Detroit steel, the object with the greater mass is always going to win. At least one other family member has also tested this theorem and proven it accurate.
On his way to work Tuesday morning, Daniel Conner and his motorcycle met up with a car that was turning into a gas station. After some split second braking maneuvers, Daniel became air born and encountered the car with only his body. This did not go well for Daniel.
A partial injury list includes: severely damaged liver, injured spleen, punctures in both lungs, broken pelvis, broken leg, shattered arm and elbow, and lacerations (among other things).
Mendy was still at home when she received a call that began, "Are you the mother of Daniel Conner?" Mendy arrived at the scene of the accident (which was only two blocks from their house) in time to see Daniel before the ambulance drove away. Daniel told her, "I'll be OK Mom."
Daniel was taken to the University of Utah Hospital where he has received excellent care. Daniel is a very popular guy. Throughout the day Tuesday, many friends and family members arrived at the hospital to offer up their support, along with large quantities of food.
Daniel's first day at the hospital was rough to say the least. Because his blood pressure was low, he could not be given adequate pain medication for many hours. Due to the internal bleeding from his liver and spleen, he needed blood transfusions. And the lung damage required Daniel to be put on a respirator.
Though the transfusions improved Daniel's blood count, his blood pressure remained low, so he stayed in the ICU for most of the day while the trauma doctors worked to stabilize him. Finally, Tuesday evening a team of surgeons was able to perform the first surgeries to relieve the pressure from his lungs and clean up the fracture sites enough to reduce the risk of infection. After surgery, Daniel's blood pressure improved to the point where he could be given pain medication.
With a tube from the respirator inserted in his throat, Daniel could not speak, but he quickly adapted. After being intebated, his first communications were to his fiancé, Christine, and Mendy. With his index finger he spelled out "I love you" on their palms. Later Daniel stayed up till 3AM talking with Aubrey using his palm writing method. The nurses finally had to order Aubrey to go home so Daniel would rest.
Throughout the first day it became obvious that Daniel is one tough kid. He remained calm and cooperative even though he was in pain. He has taken great care of his body and that will help him as he begins the recovery process. There are more surgeries ahead for Daniel and we will keep you updated of his progress on this site. Also, pictures to come.
The family thanks everyone for the many prayers offered for Daniel, and for all of your concern and support.
